Over time, our skin naturally loses some of its elasticity, which can cause the development of wrinkles, fine lines, and facial creases. Injectables are a popular way to conceal these wrinkles, rejuvenating your facial appearance without the need for cosmetic surgery.

Three of the most popular injectables are JUVÉDERM®, BOTOX®, and Dysport®. While all three can be viable options for wrinkle reduction, it is important to consider the ways in which they work differently and target different types of wrinkles.

Comparing Juvéderm, Botox, and Dysport

Here is a quick synopsis of these three injectable options.

Juvéderm

Juvéderm is a specific brand of dermal filler, made with hyaluronic acid. Essentially, dermal fillers work by “plumping up” the skin, restoring lost volume and filling in wrinkles and fine lines. Juvéderm offers a collection of injectables that can also be used to address areas of the face that have lost volume such as lips, cheeks, and under eyes, as well as areas needing increased skin hydration.

This family of dermal fillers can be a great option for treating lost volume and creases around the mouth, cheeks, and under-eye area. Results usually last six to 12 months, but maintenance injections can be used to extend those results even further.

Botox

Botox, short for botulinum toxin, is actually a form of neurotoxin, and it works by relaxing some of the underlying facial muscles. When applied to the muscles that cause wrinkles and creases, Botox can temporarily reduce those wrinkles, rejuvenating your facial appearance. In particular, Botox can be an effective way to reduce the appearance of wrinkles caused by repetitive facial expressions, such as frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines.

For most patients, the results of Botox will last three or four months before it begins to wear off. Regular maintenance injections can help extend the results.

Dysport

Dysport is very similar to Botox, to the extent that some people regard them as being almost interchangeable. Dysport has the same active ingredient as Botox, and it works in roughly the same way. For some patients, Dysport can offer more immediate results, with the effects lasting three or four months. Maintenance injections are always an option to enhance and extend results.

Considering Your Options for Wrinkle Reduction

The best way to find out which option is best for your aesthetic needs is by scheduling a consultation with a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon, who can assess your needs and recommend the injectable treatment that is right for you. Also, bear in mind that, for some patients, the best results may come from a combination of a dermal filler (such as Juvéderm) with either Botox or Dysport.
